  1. Do Koreans count years differently? If his birthdate is 7/5/87, he’d be 30, not 31. Why do I see 31?

    • You’re considered “1” on the day you are born. Then, at the start of the new year, a year is added so even if you were born in late December, in January, you are considered 2. But they still celebrate the actual day as the official birthday and celebrate then.

      Most times it results in Koreans being one year younger than we would calculate, but sometimes, with those late in the year, soon-to-turn another year with the new year birthdays, it can mean a 2- year difference.
