[Breaking] Ji Chang Wook considering role in new drama “Convenience Store Saet Byeol” [updated]

Ji Chang Wook and Kim Yoo Jung are being considered for the new Lifetime drama “Convenience Store Saet Byeol” (literal title).

UPDATE 29 JANUARY:  Both actors’ agencies have confirmed today the official casting of Ji Chang Wook and Kim Yoo Jung.  Airing on the Lifetime Korea cable channel will be sometime in Fall 2020.  (It also looks like the working title will be “Backstreet Rookie,” but we’ll see what exactly the main title will be closer to the filming date.)  Lifetime Korea is a subsidiary of the US-based A&E Network, which means this drama will be broadcast on multiple channels throughout Korea.  LIfetime Korea is making inroads into Korean television with its increase in airing dramas and variety shows starring various Korean entertainers.

On 14 January 2020, Korean news portal Sports Today said Ji Chang Wook will appear in the new lifetime drama “Convenience Store Saet Byeol” (“편의점 샛별이”).  Ji’s agency, Glorious Entertainment, said that the drama was “one of the proposed works received” and he is “discussing whether to appear.”  Kim Yoo Jung’s agency, Sidus HQ, also stated that the actress is “receiving proposals and reviewing” the same work.

“Convenience Store Saet Byeol” is based on a rom-com webtoon of the same name and tells the story of 21-year-old part-time worker and college student named Jeong Saet-byeol, and her 33-year old handsome (but unexpectedly clumsy) manager named Choi Dae-hyun, at a 24-hour convenience store.  Dae-hyun ends up working at this convenience store after leaving his position at a large corporation.  Saet-byeol answers the advertisement that Dae-hyun places for a part-time night shift worker.  Their paths cross again at the same store where a chance meeting occurred 4 years ago.

“Convenience Store Saet-Byeol” is a romance drama about a woman entering a part-time job at a convenience store run by a male owner. The original webtoon this drama will be based upon has recorded more than 5 million views, 57 million cumulative views, and more than 40 million subscribers of the series.

“Conveinience Store Saet Byeol” will be directed by PD Lee Myung Woo (“What Happened in Bali,” “The Fiery Priest,” “Punch”).  Production will be handled by Taewon Entertainment (“Barefoot Gi-bong,” “IRIS,” “Criminal Minds”)

  1. I wish they would cast him with actresses the same age. He has much better chemistry with them. I haven’t enjoyed his roles where he’s a decade older than the female lead, it just doesn’t work.

    • We respectfully disagree. The characters for this new drama are written to be 33 and 21 years old, so we would say the casting is pretty spot-on. Requiring actors in the same production to be in the same age range greatly limits the number of dramas available for those actors.

    • I recently saw clips from Suspicious Partner on YouTube and he was really cute and funny in it. I’ve decided to rewatch it now that I’ve (finally) stopped trying to recreate the feels from Healer.

It’s hard to top perfection and I realize I’m not being fair to an actor by wanting him to be the same character in everything. I’m excited now to watch Suspicious Partner again with a new appreciation of what he brings to that character.
